To read an engine oil dipstick, first ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the engine is off and cool. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth, reinsert it fully, then remove it again to check the oil level. The oil should be between the "min" and "max" marks on the dipstick; if it's below the "min" mark, you should add oil.
