An ignition knock detonation sensor detects the vibrations caused by engine knocking or pinging, which occurs when fuel-air mixtures in the engine cylinders ignite prematurely. By sensing these vibrations, the sensor sends signals to the engine control unit (ECU), which then adjusts the ignition timing to prevent knocking and ensure optimal engine performance and efficiency.
