Oxygen (O2) sensors in a properly functioning vehicle should produce a fluctuating voltage signal, typically between 0.1 volts (lean) and 0.9 volts (rich) for narrowband sensors. These fluctuations indicate that the engine is adjusting the air-fuel mixture for optimal combustion. For wideband sensors, the readings might be displayed in terms of air-fuel ratio or lambda, with 1.0 indicating a stoichiometric balance.
