GL-5 and GL-6 are classifications for gear oils defined by the American Petroleum Institute (API). GL-5 gear oils are designed for high-load conditions and contain extreme pressure additives suitable for hypoid gears, commonly used in modern vehicles. GL-6 was intended for very high-load conditions, but it is now obsolete as advancements in GL-5 formulations have rendered GL-6 unnecessary for most applications.
