Pioneer 10's power source was a set of four radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) that initially provided about 155 watts of electrical power at launch in 1972. However, due to the decay of the radioisotope fuel and the degradation of the thermoelectric materials, the power output diminished over time, and by the end of its mission, it was producing significantly less power.
